Cal State Fullerton runs out of time to rally at CSUN

Cal State Fullerton runs out of time to rally at CSUN,

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Fullerton seniors Austen Awosika, Jackson Rowe and Brandon Kamga scored 18 points apiece and the Titans scored a season-high 59 second-half points on Saturday night, but it was not enough for them to avoid their sixth loss in eight games.

Sophomore Lamine Diane had 27 points and 14 rebounds and junior Terrell Gomez had 27 points and five assists as Cal State Northridge defeated Fullerton 99-92 at the Matadome, avenging an 82-75 loss at Fullerton on Jan. 25 and beating the Titans for the first time in their last eight meetings (Jan., 2017).

Elijah Harkless added 14 points for CSUN (13-17 overall, 8-6 Big West Conference). Darius Brown II added 13 points and seven rebounds in a game that featured 50 total fouls and 62 free-throw attempts.

For the first time since Jan. 8, 2011, two Fullerton players had double-doubles in the same game. Rowe added 11 rebounds to his 18 points, and senior forward Davon Clare had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior forward Johnny Wang added 10 points, and redshirt sophomore forward Daniel Venzant contributed 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. Awosika added six assists for Fullerton (10-19, 5-9).

The Titans led 25-23 with 7:16 left in the first half when the Matadors closed the half on a 20-8 run for a 43-33 lead at the intermission. CSUN extended the margin to as much as 25 after a Michael Ou layup made it 73-48 midway through the second half.

Fullerton staged a furious rally the rest of the way. A 9-1 run quickly cut the lead to 74-57, then a 3-point play from Venzant made it a 14-point game with 7:08 left. Another 8-0 Titans run cut the margin to single digits before Gomez hit a mid-range jumper with 2:35 left. A Venzant layup cut the margin to 94-88 with 37 seconds left, and a Rowe 3-pointer made it a five-point game with 11 seconds left, but the Titans simply ran out of time.

“You have to give Fullerton credit. They played in Hawaii two nights ago. I thought they would run out of gas and they never did,” CSUN coach Mark Gottfried said. “We just had a little more than they did at the end.”

Fullerton won the rebounding battle 48-41 and outscored the Matadors in the paint 52-36.
