UC Irvine avoids post-clinch letdown, avenges earlier loss to UCSB,

IRVINE — Having already clinched the Big West Conference regular-season title and the top seed for the conference tournament, Saturday night’s Homecoming game against UC Santa Barbara was a potential stumbling block for the UC Irvine men’s basketball team.

The Anteaters maintained their focus, extending their longest win streak of the season to six games with a 69-58 victory over the Gauchos in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,000 at the Bren Events Center.

Eyassu Worku went 4 for 5 from 3-point range on his way to 20 points, Brad Greene had 16 points and 15 rebounds and Tommy Rutherford added 13 points for UCI (21-10 overall, 13-2 Big West), which held UCSB to just 22 first-half points, a season-low for the Gauchos.

Robinson Idehen scored a career-high 21 points and had 10 rebounds for UCSB (19-10, 8-6), which handed UCI one of its two Big West losses 64-61 on Feb. 8 in Santa Barbara. JaQuori McLaughlin added six assists.

The Anteaters shot 45.6 percent (26 for 57) from the floor, while holding UCSB to 36.8 percent (21 for 57). UCI also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Gauchos 43-30, and held advantages in fast-break points (11-2), points in the paint (32-26) and assists (15-13).

Worku hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give UCI an early 13-6 lead, and a Greene dunk off a rebound extended the margin to 25-12 with 7:22 left. Collin Welp gave the Anteaters a 15-point lead (31-16) on a high-arcing jumper with a defender in his face with 3:51 left, and another put-back basket by Greene gave UCI a 35-22 lead at halftime.

Evan Leonard scored his first points on a 3-pointer from the right side to give UCI its largest lead, 46-26, less than five minutes into the second half.

The Gauchos got within eight points twice in the final 82 seconds but could get no closer.
